Nissan Patrol vs Toyota Land Cruiser — Which is Better for the UAE?

The eternal UAE debate: Patrol or Land Cruiser? We break down the differences in reliability, off-road performance, running costs, and resale value to help you choose the right SUV for the UAE.

If you've spent any time in the UAE, you know that the Nissan Patrol (Y62) and the Toyota Land Cruiser (200 Series / 300 Series) are the two kings of the road. Both are everywhere — from Sheikh Zayed Road to the dunes of Al Qudra. But which one is actually better for life in the UAE? We compare them across every dimension that matters.

Overview: Nissan Patrol Y62 vs Toyota Land Cruiser 200/300

  • Nissan Patrol Y62: 5.6L V8 petrol, 400 hp, starts from AED 195,000 new (Platinum: AED 250,000+)
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 300: 3.5L V6 twin-turbo, 409 hp, starts from AED 320,000 new
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 200 (discontinued): 4.6L V8 or 5.7L V8, 381 hp
  • Both are 7-seaters with 4WD/AWD systems designed for serious off-road use

Off-Road Capability

Both vehicles are serious off-roaders. However, there are differences that matter in the UAE:

  • Patrol Y62: Outstanding low-speed torque from the V8. Heavy car but floats well on soft sand. Slightly more forgiving for beginners off-road
  • Land Cruiser 200/300: More sophisticated off-road electronics (Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select on 300 Series). Marginally better in technical terrain
  • Ground clearance — Patrol: 272mm standard vs LC300: 235mm standard (Patrol wins on stock suspension)
  • Both benefit enormously from a lift kit for serious dune bashing — Car Space can build both
  • Winner for UAE dune bashing at stock: Patrol Y62 (lighter, more ground clearance, better low-speed torque)

Reliability

  • Land Cruiser: Toyota's legendary reliability makes the LC arguably the most dependable SUV on earth. Known to run 400,000+ km with basic servicing
  • Patrol Y62: Also reliable, but Nissan's 5.6L VK56 engine has known CVT/gearbox issues on high-mileage examples. Less bulletproof than the LC
  • Land Cruiser 300 (new V6 turbo): Too new to have a long-term reliability record — exercise caution buying pre-owned early build years
  • Winner: Toyota Land Cruiser (200 Series in particular has an exceptional reliability record)

Running Costs in the UAE

  • Fuel — Patrol burns more fuel (14-18L/100km city) vs LC200 (15-19L/100km city). Similar in practice
  • Service costs — Toyota dealer service is typically 20-30% more expensive than Nissan
  • Parts — Both are well-supported. Toyota parts slightly more expensive but OEM quality is excellent
  • Tyres — Both run large tyres (275/65R17 to 285/60R18). Budget AED 2,000–4,000 per set for quality tyres
  • Insurance — Similar. Full comprehensive for either: AED 4,000–8,000 per year depending on value

Resale Value in UAE

  • Toyota Land Cruiser holds value better than almost any vehicle in the UAE — GCC spec LC200s hold 70-80% of value after 3 years
  • Nissan Patrol Y62 holds value well but slightly below Land Cruiser — 60-70% after 3 years
  • Both are significantly better than European equivalents (G-Class excepted)
  • Winner: Toyota Land Cruiser

Comfort and Interior

  • Patrol Platinum: Extremely luxurious — Bose audio, heated/cooled seats, panoramic roof
  • Land Cruiser 300: More refined interior, better build quality materials, superior infotainment
  • Third row: Both have usable (but tight) third rows for adults
  • Ride quality: LC300 is smoother and more refined on-road. Patrol feels larger and more comfortable on the highway
  • Winner: LC300 by a small margin for overall refinement

Which Should You Buy?

  • Buy a Patrol Y62 if: You want the best value per dirham, plan to do a lot of off-roading, prefer a more powerful V8, or are on a tighter budget
  • Buy a Land Cruiser 200 if: Reliability above all else is your priority, you want the best long-term resale value, and don't mind paying more
  • Buy a Land Cruiser 300 if: You want the newest technology and don't mind being the guinea pig for the new platform
  • Both vehicles benefit hugely from professional off-road builds — lift kits, upgraded tyres, bull bars, and skid plates

Car Space builds and lifts both Nissan Patrols and Toyota Land Cruisers across the UAE. We also provide pre-purchase inspections for both — so you know exactly what you're getting before you buy.
